Greetings fellow members,

In this issue, please note the sad news of the passing of FOWA member George “Grif” Griffin. There is also an message from our exiting Executive Director and an exciting announcement of a new international sportsman’s magazine.

I hope everyone has a Happy Holiday Season!

Kelly Braden
KJBraden1@aol.com

Thanks for Your Support

It’s been a rewarding tenure as your Executive Director for these nearly six years. I leave with the highest totals of Active and Corporate members in our history, the most money we’ve ever had in our treasury by far, and a succession of successful conferences each year since I came aboard in 2002. It’s going to be a tough act to follow.

While I’m proud of those accomplishments, even more rewarding have been the many great people I’ve met through FOWA. Most of them believed in, and supported, my efforts from the first day I took the reins as E/D right up until my decision to pass the baton to someone else after the outstanding conference in Homosassa. To all of you (and you know who you are!), I offer a hearty thanks for your faith in me and a pledge that our friendship and alliance will continue.

I’m still going to be quite busy. I recently completed a one-year contract as Editor-in-Chief of Destination Fish, organizing the content for its launch and the first four issues. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and I’m quite proud of that. However, an opportunity has come along that’s truly fantastic: A new magazine called Traveling Sportsman will be a high-end, first-class publication that covers fishing, hunting and travel. We're hard at work laying the groundwork for the first issue and web site. Not only will I again develop the content as Editor-in-Chief, I'm also an owner with solid funding behind the entire effort – the opportunity I've always wanted.

Kelly Braden, former Assistant Editor at Wave magazine and Associate Editor at Destination Fish, has joined the TS team as Managing Editor. As you know, Kelly is also the 1st Vice President/President- elect of FOWA.

I've never felt this positive and excited about an opportunity, and of course I'd be delighted to share more details with you if interested. Our pay rate for manuscripts and images is among the highest in the industry, and we pay on acceptance (not after publication). TS will cover fishing, hunting and travel destinations throughout the world and U.S. Send any queries on trips you’ve taken recently or plan on taking soon, and I’ll provide our Writers’

Guidelines and pay rates. Many of the new columns and departments will also be freelance written. Until the web site is set up with Traveling Sportsman emails, you can reach me at doug7kelly@yahoo.com.

Best of holiday wishes,

Doug

OBITUARY

 From Jan Allyn:

“I don't know if you heard, but FOWA member George "Grif" Griffin, author of our book Snook Kingdom and The Mostly Mullet Cookbook from Pineapple Press, died last week. About a year or so ago he was treated for lung cancer, but complications from it and other health problems ultimately caused his demise. He and his wife Joanne were founding members of the Suwannee Audubon Society and fierce environmental advocates. Below is his obituary that appeared in the Gainesville Sun.”

He was an active environmentalist and founded two Audubon Societies in Florida.

"Grif" was survived by his wife of 32 years, Joanne Griffin, three daughters; Laura Griffin, Holly Harden, and Mary Beth Steinke, two sons Jeff and Jamie Rittenhouse, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Florida Wildlife

We prefer to purchase first-time, one-time rights to manuscripts and photographs. If submissions are being considered by other publishers, please notify us of this fact. Articles, artwork and photographs may appear on the Florida Wildlife Web site.

Florida Wildlife is looking for well-written and exciting Florida fishing, hunting and nature-based recreation stories. These stories should emphasize the appreciation of the overall outdoor experience and not focus solely on the taking of game. Stories should also reflect the concern hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts have about conserving wildlife and the habitat. We are looking for:

Freshwater and saltwater fishing articles.

Hunting and hunting-related stories.

Articles about outdoor activities such as tracking, diving, boating, hiking, wildlife watching, etc.

How-to articles with tips and techniques for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts.

Game recipes - for camp sites, backyard grilling and kitchen cooking.

Florida Wildlife has a long history of showcasing outstanding and award-winning photography and artwork. In order to continue this tradition, only extremely sharp, in-focus and well lit photographs are considered for publication. We prefer high-resolution scans rather than film to avoid damage to or loss of original work. Low- resolution images enlarged via a computer program or other obviously retouched images will not be considered. We cannot accept soft focus or blurred images. Each image submitted, whether digital, transparency or glossy print, should be labeled with the photographer's name and a number. The number should correspond with a separate caption sheet. The caption sheet should describe the action, place and/or person pictured. Include the name, address, Social Security number, telephone number and e-mail address of the photographer. All images should:

Be shot in Florida or illustrate species living in Florida.

Portray hunting, fishing and all other activities conforming to

Florida's legal regulations, safety practices and to high ethical standards.

All submissions are on speculation, and payment is made upon publication. Payment varies, depending on length, complexity and quality. In general, we pay $50 for each photograph (up to $200 for a front cover) and $75-$250 for articles. Stories and photographs will not be accepted for publication if they:

Refer to alcohol or tobacco products.

Use profanity or picture profane printed products such as explicit t-shirts.

Advertise or promote a business or product.

Fail to show respect for the game being taken and/or contain overly graphic details of the harvest.

Are strictly "trophy" in content—pictures of a sportsperson with harvest or "how I got my biggest . . ."stories.
