Greetings!

The FOWA Fall Conference is on! Note for those attending: There will be a BBQ on Thursday night, so dress in western garb if you are so inclined. There will also be a Halloween costume contest on Saturday evening at the hospitality suite, so pack your favorite costume. Be sure and check out the photos of the Fall Conference's hotel below after this important message from our esteemed director.

Conference to be Held Despite Hurricane

Several people have called who are registered for the Oct. 26-30 Fall FOWA Conference to make sure it's still on. I checked with the hotel in Kissimmee and they did not incur any damage. Although Disney closed their parks through today, Dave Burkhardt reached someone involved with the fishing charters and was told that that should be up and running by Wed. morning as well.

Accordingly, the FOWA Board of Directors voted to proceed with the conference, notwithstanding the difficulties some of our members in South Florida may be experiencing. We will proceed with the conference even if for any reason the fishing is called off (and should that occur, we'll immediately notify all those signed up to fish).

Our best wishes go out to all those affected by Hurricane Wilma. Fortunately, no one has canceled their conference registration and in fact several from South Florida said they'd like to leave for a few days as planned due to the lack of electricity in their area.

Thanks for your understanding and support, and we look forward to seeing everyone as planned this Wednesday.

Doug Kelly, Executive Director

They say one picture is worth a thousand words, so below are four thousand words worth of pictures of the Ramada Inn, where the FOWA Fall Conference will be held at 7470 Highway 192 West in Kissimmee, FL 34747. If you are using Mapquest or Yahoo maps, use the address 7470 West Irlo Bronson Highway. It is a fantastic location with two pools, a outdoor covered-recreation area with billiards and ping-pong tables, two restaurants, a mini-golf course, gift shop, arcade and of course, all the wonderful companionship of fellow FOWA members.

Pays flat fee of $500-$1000 for features of 750-1400 words. Submit query only (no unsolicited manuscripts) by mail with SASE. PHOTOS/ART: "If a writer pitches us on a cruising story, photography MUST be part of the package (35mm color slides). Photography 'tells' the story as much as the words do in this case, and poor quality will result in a story being turned down." Pay depends on usage in magazine (various rates for sizes), although it's included in fee for cruising stories. HINTS: "The most common mistake is ignoring our 'no unsolicited manuscripts or photography' policy. Not only do we not accept them, we also do not return them. Another mistake is to assume we cover motorsailers, but these boats are still considered sailing vessels, so we don't."

Transparencies: 35 mm or larger, B&W or 4-color." HINTS: "Do not fax mss. Send good photos and take a fresh approach. Create a professional yet friendly article. Send diagrams, maps and photos of unique details, if needed. In interviews, we are more concerned with 'words of wisdom' they can impart, rather than a list of their accomplishments. Reloading articles must include source information and backup data. If it's not about shotguns or shotgunners, don't send it. If you can't think of a fresh approach, don't bother. Check your facts and data! Never say: 'You don't need to check my data; I never make mistakes.' We will find your mistakes (or our readers will)!"

Recreational Fishing Alliance Testifies at New York Assembly Hearing on Oceans Management

RFA’s Deputy Director of Government Affairs Michael Doebley testified at a field hearing of the New York Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation on the health and the future of New York’s ocean environment, which was held at Jones Beach State Park on October 20th.

Environmental groups are declaring New York fisheries are in a state of crisis. Their answer is mandating No-Fishing MPA’s (Marine Protected Areas), whether they are needed or not.

RFA testified that fishery management law, such as the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Management and Conservation Act and the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Fishery Management mandated that fisheries be rebuilt and managed and conserved properly. RFA also presented data demonstrating that numerous fisheries, such as black seabass, scup, summer flounder, and striped bass were in fact recovering or fully recovered.

“I think this information took the wind out of the sails of those who were pushing for radical changes in how fisheries are managed, to say the least”, said Doebley, who testified before the committee.

RFA declared its opposition to legislation pending in New York that is intended to lead to the establishment of No-Fishing MPAs, and urged the committee to vote favorably on the New York Freedom to Fish. Additionally, RFA also opposed the formation of a New York task force or commission to recommend changes in how the state manages fisheries or activities that impact the marine environment.

"Yet another task force or commission would be a waste of time and money. The United States Commission on Ocean Policy has issued numerous recommendations in these areas. New York can now act upon the recommendations in areas that are under state responsibility", said Doebley.

Environmental groups have pushed for legislation for a similar task force in other states but have not been successful. “We believe there is recognition on the part of the legislators that the proposed task forces were designed to be stacked with proponents of No-Fishing MPAs and nothing more than attempt to give the appearance of government endorsement for this scientifically, socially, and economically controversial concept”, said Doebley.

“We were pleased by how interested and engaged the members of the committee were in the discussion. Assemblyman Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst), a member of the committee, demonstrated yet again why he is the recreational fisherman’s best friend in the NY Assembly”, said Doebley.

The Recreational Fishing Alliance is a national, grassroots political action organization representing recreational fishermen and the recreational fishing industry on marine fisheries issues. The RFA Mission is to safeguard the rights of saltwater anglers, protect marine, boat and tackle industry jobs, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our Nation's saltwater fisheries.
