From Sandy Friend

SUBJECT: Hurricanes impact hiking opportunities across Florida

With hiking season officially opening in October, the Florida Trail Association faces an unprecedented task: dealing with hurricane damage experienced statewide along the 1,400-mile Florida Trail, one of eight National Scenic Trails in the United States, as well as Florida Trail System loop and side trails in state parks and state forests across Florida.

As a FOWA supporting member, the Florida Trail Association would like you to be aware of our efforts and help to publicize the enormous task ahead. Please visit
http://www.floridatrail.org/html/hurricanes.html for a full copy of our press release. Coordinate follow-up questions and requests for interviews through Sandra Friend, Communications Coordinator, Florida Trail Association: sandrafriend@florida-trail.org or 877-HIKE-FLA x15.

October 13, 2004:

Great news today...the Florida Trail reopens in all three National Forests in Florida, with the exception of the segment through the Juniper Prairie Wilderness in the Ocala National Forest. There are some associated
precautions associated with each of the sections reopening. Please see
www.floridatrail.org for the latest!
