Greetings,

I trust everyone got through the hurricane(s) with minimal damage and, hopefully, no injuries. It has been a stressful couple of months for many of us. I know hurricane problems will keep a few from coming to the upcoming Fall Conference on October 27-31, but the majority of people and sponsors who registered for the original date will still be coming. There will even be a Halloween costume party at the dinner at Jungle Gardens, so come prepared with a costume! Be sure and bring your digital camera (and any wire connections to upload pictures) for the Digital Photo Contest at the conference.

There is a new section in this market newsletter called “Spotlight on a Member.” This edition features a recently published book called Alaska Fishing that contains a number of photographs by Andy Hahn. Any members who are interested in letting our membership know about their recently published materials can send me their information. Also, if you have any items (such as cameras, computers, etc.) that you wish to sell, I can put out the word in our newsletter.

Welcome to the many new corporate sponsors! If any sponsors are interested in having a short press release of one to three paragraphs appear in the bi-weekly market newsletter, please send them to me at KJBraden1@aol.com. As always, feel free to send any market news or job listings you come across as well. Please make sure that job listings have not already expired and they pertain to the outdoors or media in some way.

Here is a message from our esteemed Executive Director:

No Menace Will Cancel Venice

By now you should have received the letter explaining all your options for the Oct. 27-31 Fall FOWA Conference in Venice/Sarasota. If not, reply to this email and I'll send one out right away.

The conference offers a great lineup of craft improvement seminars, the Frank Sargeant Roast, banquets galore, our gala auction, the Excellence In Craft awards, the always-exciting Corporate Sponsor Breakout, an awesome fishing tournament, skeet shooting and archery at the county range, a visit to Mote Marine Lab, dinner at Sarasot Jungle Gardens, elections of new officers, and opportunities to network with journalists and sponsors familiar and new to you.

This has been a tough hurricane season and it's impacted many of us and our friends. But FOWA will move forward nonetheless and maintain the momentum that has spurred our growth and energy. Please show your support by attending the conference, and I look forward to seeing your frightening countenance just before Halloween.

SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER

From Andy Hahn:

I recently found out that a soon-to-be-released guidebook on fishing in Alaska contains some of my photos. The publisher sent me advance chapters for review, and they've done an excellent job. The book makes a great source of info for anybody planning to fish in Alaska.

Ultimate Guidebook for Fishing in Alaska

Scheduled for release in January 2005, Alaska Fishing: The Ultimate Angler’s Guide, 3rd Edition contains 464 pages of up-to-date and essential information for anybody planning a fishing trip to Alaska. Compiled by Rene Limeres and Gunnar Pedersen, the book features how-to and where-to tips for pursuing 17 different species of Alaskan game fish. You’ll find detailed illustrations on tackle and rigs, along with maps and helpful charts on peak seasons and availability. Chapters focus on each species as well as the state’s six regions. Some of the industry’s finest photographers, including FOWA’s Andy Hahn, contributed images to make this book as visually enjoyable as it is informative. Published by Publishers Design Group (800-587-6666; www.publishersdesign), the guidebook, listed at $32.95, can be purchased at www.ultimaterivers.com or by calling 916-784-0500.

Both solicited and unsolicited images are accepted: Velvia 50 or equivalent for non-action shots in bright light; high shutter speeds for fast moving fish (1/1000-plus); bracket vertically and horizontally where possible; keep fish main focus. Only originals are published. Duplicate slides may be sent for review purposes only if the originals are available. A small-boat-sailing thread must run throughout the article. How do the unique conditions affect the small-boat sailor? Of what dangers must he be aware? Where can he go that deep-draft boats cannot? How do prevailing weather or water conditions affect his small sailboat? Purchases first North American serial rights. Find guidelines at
