Greetings fellow members!

This issue of the Market Edge has a decided lack of current markets needs. There is a dire need for current market info! The Market Edge can be sent more often if we had more current market news listings. Any listings that you’d like to share can be sent to me at MarketEdge@fowa.org. Please also advise your editors and the magazines that you write for to send market needs. In this edition, you will find news from members, including new member Elam Stoltzfus, and pictures from the Bass Pro Shop seminar event held in Orlando.

If you have any exceptional Conference Photos that you would like published on the FOWA web site, please send them to Mike Richards, FOWA’s webmaster, at mike.richards1@verizon.net. Please limit photos to five per member, so that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute.

HIGHLIGHTED NEWS

Outdoor Writers’ Awards Bring Additional Honors for UPF
WILD FLORIDA, the newest series of books by University Press of Florida, swept up the Excellence in Craft Awards at the Florida Outdoor Writers Association conference in Hawk's Cay Resort, just south of Islamorada.
u8232 "30 ECO-TRIPS IN FLORIDA: THE BEST NATURE EXCURSIONS (AND HOW TO LEAVE ONLY YOUR FOOTPRINTS)" by eco-tripper Holly Ambrose took first place. "30 ECO-TRIPS IN FLORIDA" is the perfect guide to finding high-quality, less-trafficked, authentic adventures amid Florida's increasingly developed
atural areas and enjoying them responsibly. Ambrose provides general background information for each area, descriptions of wildlife and recreational opportunities, lodging information, and listings for nature
ours and outfitters.
u8232 The Chicago Tribune says, "Forget what you did during spring break in Ft. Lauderdale and Panama City Beach. The real wild life of Florida isn't to be found in the bars and discos. You'll find it, instead, hiking the trails or kayaking the waterways of the state and national park systems lined up in "30 ECO-TRIPS IN FLORIDA."
u8232 "HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE SUNSHINE STATE" by veteran outdoorswoman Sandra Friend took the second place Excellence in Craft Award. The book covers 2,273 miles of trails across Florida organized by region and provides a user-friendly trail companion for beginners and advanced hikers alike. Although it might seem odd to hike in Florida, what the state lacks in altitude it more than makes up for in habitat diversity.
u8232 The Hartford Courant says, "If your idea of a vacation in Florida has more to do with mangroves than Mickey Mouse or Miami, check out 'HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE SUNSHINE STATE.'"
u8232 WILD FLORIDA books are written for the many people who visit and/or move to Florida to participate in the remarkable outdoors, an environment rich in birds, animals, and activities, many exclusive to the state. "30 ECO-TRIPS IN FLORIDA," and "HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE SUNSHINE STATE" are the first two books in the series.
u8232 The third book in the WILD FLORIDA series "Fishing Florida's Flats," written by world-champion angler Jan Stephen Maizler and featuring guest contributions by eleven Florida fishing experts, will be available Fall
007. "Flats" fishing is one of the most popular coastal activities in Florida and Maizler's book will offer invaluable tips on equipment and technique for a range of experienced anglers. As part of the WILD FLORIDA series, University Press of Florida will soon publish Bill and Mary Burnham's "Florida Beach Access Guide" and Lucy Tobias's "50 Great Walks in Florida."
u8232 FOWA award-winner Sandra Friend is also working on "Exploring Florida's Botanical Wonders" for the WILD FLORIDA series.
u8232 Congratulations to Holly Ambrose, Sandra Friend, and the Wild Florida series.

MEMBER NEWS

From Jim Wilson:

New Member Elam Stoltzfus
The Apalachicola River: an American Treasure film documentary received an honorable mention at the Louis Wolfson II Film & Video Awards in Miami on July 28th.

At the ceremony in Miami receiving the award, Elam Stoltzfus and Clyde Butcher

The Apalachicola River: an American Treasure film was featured at the Wine County Film Festival on August 13th in Sonoma, CA as part of the weekly lineup of featured educational films.

The traveling museum exhibit of the "Apalachicola River: an American Treasure" will open at the Chipola College in Marianna, FL. on September 14th, 6 to 9:00 CST. Please pass the word along and invite your friends to attend. This showing is made possible by the Chipola Area Board of REALTORS, The Marianna Automobile Dealers Association, and the Jackson County Tourist Development Council. Members of the Chipola Regional Arts Association are making arrangements for the exhibit with help from the Artist Guild of Northwest Florida. For information, call Joan Stadsklev, Chipola Director of Fine and Performing Arts, at 850-718-2301, or visit ApalachicolaAmericanTreasure.com.

Clyde Butcher, renowned Florida Everglades photographer, traveled to Apalachicola to train his gifted eye on the watershed; his still images join those of photojournalist Richard Bickel of Apalachicola. Images from the two photographers also comprise a two-volume book set.

Headlining the exhibit is the film by documentary film maker Elam Stoltzfus. For ten years, Stoltzfus has captured rare images of natural Florida, with his Living Waters documentary recently winning a coveted Crystal Reel award for excellence.

Sammy Tedder, a Florida Panhandle music legend, scored the film, weaving in sounds of Native and African-American music, and using natural instruments he fashioned from the Apalachicola River including swamp reeds for flutes and cypress logs for percussion.

Inspired by the mighty Apalachicola, the exhibit records the history of Native Americans and other settlers whose descendants still live in northwest Florida. It is the story of people who make their living from the river; it is the story of politics and water wars between Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. It showcases the haunting beauty of rarely seen places like the River Styx, Dead Lakes, Kennedy Creek, Chipola River and Tate’s Hell.

The traveling exhibit is managed by the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee where it is currently on display. The exhibit will travel from the Brogan to Chipola and throughout the American South.

The Education Channel's 2006 Independents' Film Festival is pleased to announce that the entry of, "Apalachicola River: An American Treasure," is the recipient of a 2006 Florida Choice Award! The Florida Choice Award is given to Florida filmmakers who demonstrate exceptional merit. The entries were viewed by a panel of industry professionals, and judged according to high standards for technical quality, creativity and artistry.

An awards ceremony and theatrical screening is scheduled for September 15, 2006, 7:00 p.m., at the beautiful, historic Tampa Theatre in downtown Tampa.

Congratulations on your excellent work!

Bob Barbour
"Many people are now beginning to appreciate the importance of preserving both personal and business histories. This information, or more accurately, these valuable "living legacies," cannot be truly conveyed through a photo album, a collection of letters or home videos.  There are great stories to be told by fascinating individuals that capture the unique character of the subject.
u8232 Through a creative blend of the stories, pictures and music we capture the essence of a family, a company, or an organization or group. We preserve these stories for a lifetime as an heirloom or for corporate archives.  We do this by combining four critical elements for a successful production - highly experienced staff, innovative project design, a sensitive, tailored approach to each client project, and state of the art equipment and delivery."

Coastal Angler Magazine - FOWA Press release
f0
lorida Outdoor Writers Association’s Members Invade Florida Keys and Hawk’s Cay Resort
u8232 Remember the great time we had together celebrating the Florida Outdoor Writers Association's (FOWA) 60th Anniversary at Hawk’s Cay Resort and the Florida Keys fishing, diving, snorkeling, bird watching, eating, drinking and enjoying the laid back Keys ambiance?
u8232 FOWA members function as the communication tools for the outdoor industry. FOWA members are the eyes, ears, and voices that connect the public to the folks and places that provide the products and services
hat people need to enjoy the great outdoors!
u8232 The stories we communicate though the media we work with will often determine if and when people will be visiting the sites that host our FOWA conferences.
u8232 So please, if you write anything about Hawk’s Cay Resort or the Florida Keys (or any other reference to conference sites), send us your article clips
u8232 It is vital to let the folks at the offices of tourism know what you are doing to promote their areas. They put up serious dollars to host our conferences, and they need to see return on their investment. That means they need to see your work!
u8232 Don't forget there's a $500 prize for the best conference site story!
u8232 Please, send me your clippings so we can get them to the folks that support the FOWA.
u8232 You may e-mail them to us at rodney@coastalanglermagazine.com, or mail them to Coastal Angler Magazine (CAM) PO Box 373257 Satellite Beach, FL 32837-1257

Create Family Fun with a Kids All-American Fishing Event
f0
Register now and receive free planning materials and kit
u8232 Whether experienced or not in hosting a community fishing event, there is a free and user-friendly program available to assist organizations interested in putting on a fun activity of this kind for area kids and families.
u8232 Almost any group is eligible to hold a turn-key Wal-Mart Kids All-American Fishing Program event presented by Zebco (KAAF), and receive the fishing derby kit and planning materials through an online request process at www.kids-fishing.com . However, the materials must be ordered in advance and the deadline for doing so, January 31, 2007, is rapidly approaching.
u8232 Hooked On Fishing International Inc. (HOFI), the world’s largest organizer of on-water youth fishing events, provides the Derby Organizer Support Kit at no cost. Included in the package are an event planner’s handbook, banner, publicity posters, plastic goodie bags, two Zebco rods and reels, tackle box, participant souvenirs and other giveaways. HOFI provides additional free resources at its kids-fishing.com Web site, such as customizable press releases, newspaper announcements and timely e-mail planning reminders.
u8232 “In 2006, Hooked On Fishing International assisted partnering organizations in hosting nearly 1,900 youth fishing events across the country” said Daniel Johnson, HOFI president. “We look forward to working with those same groups and more in 2007, providing positive youth experiences by reconnecting kids and families through the fun of fishing and the enjoyment of the great outdoors."
u8232 Because the KAAF Derby Organizer Support Kits are built in advance based on approved event registrations, interested groups do need to plan ahead and sign-up by the January 31 deadline.  Everything a group needs to know about hosting a KAAF-supported event can be found on the program’s website,
ww.kids-fishing.com .
u8232 The Kids All-American Fishing event support kits are made available free of charge thanks to the support of marquee corporate partners Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Zebco.  The program receives additional support from some of the nation’s top brands including Banana Boat, Castrol, Eagle Claw, Fujifilm, Keebler, Kellogg’s, Laker Fishing, Repel and Wet Ones.
u8232 HOFI, Inc., is a Tulsa, Okla.-based company. Since 1987, more than eight million youngsters and their families have participated in the program at events held throughout all 50 states and at U.S. military bases as far away as England, Germany, South Korea, and Japan. For more information about attending or hosting Kids All-American Fishing events, visit www.kids-fishing.com.

Tru-Tungsten¨’s Marty Stone Tungsten T-Rig Redefines Screw-Lock Weights

“When is a weight more than just a sinker?”  When it’s part of a complete fishing system that puts more fish in your boat!

Tru-Tungsten¨’s Marty Stone Tungsten T-Rig is more than just a weight! Its nickel titanium helical wire feature, allows anglers fishing soft plastics in heavy cover to keep their weight right where it needs to be — firmly against the head of the soft plastic bait.

There are other screw-lock weights on the market, but none offer the slim profile of Tru-Tungsten¨ weights or the nickel titanium wire that flexes with every undulation of r plastic worm, lizard, craw or creature bait thus saving lures and avoiding line fray.

“This weight is everything you could want in a screw-lock sinker,” says 4-time Bassmaster Class qualifier and 2-time BASS tournament champion Marty Stone. “I usually go to a screw-lock weight in really heavy cover when a conventional slip sinker would cause lots of hang ups.”

Stone adds, “The new Tru-Tungsten¨ T-Rig has a small profile that works through the cover really well, and the wire bends with the bait so it doesn’t tear up your lures or fray your line. It really makes a difference with my fishing.”

Tru-Tungsten¨ is the manufacturer of the world’s finest tungsten weights, jigs, jigheads, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and related fishing equipment. Only Tru-Tungsten¨ products are 97 percent pure tungsten — the highest level of purity in the industry. Tru-Tungsten¨ weights are 50 percent smaller and provide more sensitivity than conventional lead weights. Tru-Tungsten¨ products ecologically safe, preserving the integrity of our fishing environment.

Hank Parker Leaving Mann’s After Almost 30 Years

Eufaula, AL - Hank Parker, arguably America’s most famous and respected fisherman and television host will be leaving Mann’s Bait Company.

Parker has been a Mann’s pro-staff member for almost 30 years and has been instrumental in helping the company to develop and promote new products. During this same period, Parker has had a long-term relationship with Berkley¨ fishing rods and lines as well as Abu Garcia¨ reels. His new agreement with Pure Fishing¨ will allow him to continue to represent these products but will now include Berkley lures and potentially other products within the Pure Fishing family of brands.

“It’s been a very difficult decision for me. Mann’s is a great company and I’ve enjoyed our long-term association. We’ve developed a lot of great baits over the years including the most recent introduction of the HardNoseª line of soft plastics. But, for a number of reasons this expanded role with Pure Fishing is an opportunity I could not turn down,” stated Parker.

Mann's President, Frank Oelerich, said, "I consider Hank to be one of my closest friends. He was always there when we needed him and all of the Mann's associates wish him well in coming times."

Mann’s Bait Company, a world leader in the manufacture of artificial lures, produces a broad range of fish catching products for both fresh and saltwater markets, consisting of spinnerbaits, crankbaits, soft plastics, lead lures and hollow body baits.

National Hunting and Fishing Day
September is a great month to get outdoors. Whether you're hiking, biking or doing some late-season camping, it's a good time for you and other family members to watch wildlife and enjoy the world around you.

Here's an additional outdoor opportunity this month. Sportsmen's groups, including some National Wildlife Federation affiliate organizations around the country, are observing National Hunting and Fishing Day--Saturday, September 23 with special events and activities. These events are family-oriented, fun and hands-on that everyone will enjoy. This is a great way to introduce youth and newcomers to outdoor sports while teaching them about the important role that hunting and fishing play in wildlife conservation programs.

NWF is a partner in National Hunting and Fishing Day 2006 as part of its mission to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children’s future. We encourage you to find and participate in an event in your area. Check out the National Hunting and Fishing Day website and spend some time outdoors!

Women in the Outdoors Signs Cindy Garrison as New Spokeswoman
Cindy Garrison, host of ESPN2’s “Get Wild With Cindy Garrison,” became the newest spokeswoman for Women in the Outdoors at the official signing of her agreement, Sept. 11.

  •  Garrison discovered the outdoors on her grandparents’ Oregon ranch and in Northern California where she grew up. Her parents were both avid fishers and hunters, two activities that the Women in the Outdoors program emphasizes in their more than 400 events hosted across the country each year.
  •  With a new understanding of what women want, thanks to data from a 2005 study commissioned by the NWTF and funded by a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Women in the Outdoors program is posed to make a greater impact among women eager to get outdoors and get involved.

Help Make a Difference for Wildlife
visit to SeaWorld and Busch Gardens brings you up-close with extraordinary wildlife-from killer whales and polar bears to endangered tigers and gorillas. But your connection to animals doesn't have to end when you leave the park. Whether you live in the country, suburbs or city, you can enjoy wildlife like birds, butterflies and bees in your own backyard every day.
u8232 SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove have committed to featuring certified Backyard Wildlife Habitats in the parks to demonstrate how guests can actively help protect wildlife close to home. The parks hope to inspire visitors to create critical habitat for native animals and plants in their own backyards - whether that's an expansive lawn, small patio or apartment balcony.
u8232 Thanks to strong support from these Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks, National Wildlife Federation just surpassed its goal of certifying 70,000 habitats for its 70th anniversary. But we can still use your help!  Because of quickly diminishing wild places, it's crucial that more people like you to make a place for wildlife.
u8232 Creating a wildlife habitat is easy, simply follow NWF's steps and register your yard as an official certified wildlife habitat. http://nwf.r.delivery.net/r/r?1.1.En.2U9.1d5s8C.By5aV4..M.ClLe.2a42.3WXHBV
u8232 Committed to wildlife conservation in the U.S and around the world, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld and Discovery Cove invite you visit a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat site at one of its parks across the country.
u8232 "Dedicating space to these Backyard Wildlife Habitats aligns perfectly with the long-standing conservation commitment of my family and this company - not just the theme parks but parent company Anheuser-Busch," said Virginia Busch, conservation ambassador for the Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks.
These habitats are just one way we hope to inspire a similar conservation ethic among the millions of park guests who visit us each year."

Hunters More Willing than Anglers to Protest for Greater Outdoor Coverage in Newspapers
Also, Most Sportsmen Willing to Report Fish and Wildlife Violations

According to AnglerSurvey.com and HunterSurvey.com, a majority of hunters and target shooters are willing to unsubscribe or boycott newspapers that do not provide coverage of hunting. Of the 1,359 hunters and shooters responding to the poll, 55% reported they would participate in such a protest, 10% reported they would not, while 35% said “maybe.”  Anglers were less willing to participate in such a protest, with 35% saying they would participate, 25% reporting “no” and 40% with “maybe”.

Each month, Southwick Associates conducts a panel survey of thousands of anglers, hunters and target shooters regarding their opinions on current issues, their fishing and hunting/shooting activities, and their buying habits. Their opinions regarding current issues are then shared with the media and conservation groups working on the behalf of the fishing, hunting, and shooting communities.

Last month, anglers and hunters/shooters were also asked "if you saw someone, or knew of someone, illegally harvesting a fish or animal out of season, under the size limit or over the bag limit, would you report that person to your state wildlife officers?" Nearly 78% of anglers reported yes, they would certainly/most likely report violations and 93% of hunters would do the same.  Only 9% of anglers indicated they would not report violations while only 1% of hunters reported the same.  The rest were unsure.

Anglers and firearm enthusiasts willing to participate in the monthly surveys should visit www.AnglerSurvey.com  or www.HunterSurvey.com.  First time visitors are asked to complete a short registration form. E-mail addresses collected will only be used to send monthly surveys to participants; they will never be sold, given away or used for any other purpose. Each month, ten $100 gift certificates are awarded through a random drawing from participants who take the survey. The survey was developed by Southwick Associates of Fernandina Beach, Florida (www.southwickassociates.com). Southwick Associates tracks economic trends related to wildlife and the outdoors to help conservation agencies and trade groups protect and expand fishing, hunting and other outdoor opportunities. More information can be found at www.southwickassociates.com/surveys/.

If you have a question you would like to pose to anglers, hunters and target shooters, please e-mail them to info@southwickassociates.com. The results will be shared in future press releases.
