Greetings! This issue of the FOWA Market Newsletter is filled with many current market needs, jobs, contests and offers from corporate sponsors.
On a personal note, Doug Kelly finally popped the question (after a year and eight months) on Magen's Bay Beach in St. Thomas and he and I are officially engaged. (I figured I could slip that in here.)
I hope to see many of you again at the 2004 Fall Conference in Sarasota/Venice and meet others for the first time. It will be a fun-filled conference with fishing, shooting sports (my personal favorite), and other fantastic activities. Please plan to attend as it will be a great conference!

FantasyFlyFish.com
FantasyFlyFish.com is a unique fly-fishing website on the internet and is just about to launch (July 29). They’re interested in hearing from FOWA members and will pay $25 per piece. They also plan on donating a percentage of revenue to CCA, Trout Unlimited and similar organizations on a monthly basis. Impossible Pictures – THE UNDERWATER BRIEF
I am writing from Impossible Pictures who have worked on all the 'Walking with Dinosaurs and Beasts' programmes (BBC/Discovery) - you may well have seen them. They are documentary programmes where we have re-created dinosaurs and then their successors - the 'beasts' in their own habitat. We follow the animals in their natural habitat and have created classic natural history style documentaries - with the help of animatronics and advanced computer graphics. We are working on a new series that looks at the earth and its inhabitants pre-dinosaur and have a number of underwater locations to find.
We wondered if you would be kind enough to look at the brief below and let us know your thoughts. Can I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for reading all this! We are chasing locations daily at the moment and would be so grateful for help ASAP.
We want to get hold of either location names - or more importantly pictures. We are looking at an 8 day underwater shoot and need to find 3 sea locations and 1 lake location - that are accessible and hopefully where possible close together.
At the end of this email is a section that covers all the points we will be considering once we start to decide on final locations...
Sea Locations
1) Pre-Cambrian
A featureless area of water - clear or slightly muggy water - fine sand - not cloudy sand. Possibly black sand would be good? Could be filmed heading out to sea. This is an ancient environment and should seem simple and empty. NB. This could possibly be filmed in the same location as 2) but be shot heading out to open sea. It would be good if this area was not deep as we want to see creatures on the sea floor and see the sky above. If we use the same location as 2) the floor will need to be different - i.e. rocky area turning into sandy one. We want as few fish as possible as they would probably need to be painted out by our computer guys if they strayed into shot!
2) Cambrian
There needs to be very little/no complex vegetation on the bottom/in the sea - sea lettuce would be great - primitive sea plants only - possibly choral could be ok - we would need to see pics. We don't want animal/crustaceans around. Ideally we would love to find interesting rock formations with sandy areas in between. We would like to be working in about 6ft of water. Again ideally no/few fish!
3 ) Silurian
A Seaweady rock and sandy cove with some algae would be great. It needs to be a protected area - a cove would be good - as we want to dress the set underwater with choral shells and simple plant life- and want it to be a controllable/consistent environment so need to avoid strong currents. We do want animal/crustaceans around - limpets and barnacles, shells, star fish, sea urchins etc...As this sequence is linked to a topside shoot we would like to have a slope into the water - probably a sandy beach. - some of our creatures crawl out of the water (would be nice to be working in about 6ft of water). Again we would ideally want to find interesting rock formations with areas of sand - a distinctive place in some way different from the above - Underwater caves would be great - where animals could hide and observe each other and the light gets interesting.
A comment on sand
- White sand would probably be best but we would work around this if we found the right location
- If you have areas with great black sand we would love to see them - it could be very dramatic and give variety between the 3 locations.
Fresh Water Location
4) Devonian
Underwater - logs, dead vegetation or rock formations - a real 'other worldly feel
Our creatures crawl out of the water and lie on the bank so we need a slope not a drop into the water- where our creatures go through mating rituals - at night and in the day, i.e. we need to do a few days night shoot. Underwater we want a dank environment - where our animals hide behind the rotting logs and large animals lurk in the distance.
If you have pictures and or suggestions we would be so grateful for your comments. Likewise if you know of anyone else who might have advice we would be happy to have our request passed on or to contact anyone you suggest.
These series have covered the globe and we are always on the lookout for new locations with real energy to them. We need places that are clearly defined and striking.
Details to tie up later/consider in choosing out locations:
Temperature of the water and therefore how long we can stay under water at a time
Visibility - is this effected by times of day/year?
Depth of location - this effects hours we can film
Any dangers in the waters? Snakes/predators!
Accessibility - what sort of support would be need? Is the location accessible from the shore or only by boat?
Is this a tourist/out of the way location?
Permits - who would we discuss these with and how easy are they to get?

Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 3 - 6 months after acceptance; if the story fits a particular theme of a future issue, the time frame could be longer. Buys first N.A. print and permanent electronic rights. Rarely accepts reprints. Responds 1 month. Sample by mail with 9x12 SASE. Subscription $21.95; $29.95 Canada; $39.95 other. CURRENT NEEDS: "We'd like to see well-written, first-person accounts of interesting yacht cruises, whether stateside or overseas. We'd also like to learn about adventurous trips, such as circumnavigations." Pays flat fee of $500 - $1000 for features of 750 - 1400 words. Submit query by mail with SASE. Does NOT accept unsolicited mss.
PHOTOS/ART: "If a writer pitches us on a cruising story, photography MUST be part of the package (35mm color slides). Photography 'tells' the story as much as the words do in this case, and poor quality will result in a story being turned down." Pay depends on usage in magazine (various rates for sizes), although it's included in fee for cruising stories.
HINTS: "The most common mistake is ignoring our 'no unsolicited manuscripts or photography' policy. Not only do we not accept them, we also do not return them. Another mistake is to assume we cover motorsailers, but these boats are still considered sailing vessels, so we don't."

Flying Fisherman® Adds Award Winning Video To Web Site
Based in the Florida Keys since 1972, Flying Fisherman® President, Pat Sheldon, was commissioned by tourism officials to produce a sport fishing video presentation that would communicate the Keys fishing experience. The combination of his background in television production and other fields of communications, and a love for the topic, inspired him to tell the story about fishing in America’s Caribbean Islands. The objective was to distribute the program to world wide outlets for use on broadcast TV, cable TV, commercial air lines, conventions, trade shows, as an opening at presentations, on line, or any other venue offering an opportunity to showcase Florida Keys fishing. Results so far include hitting all distribution targets and 16 national awards during a 10-year run that is still ongoing.
“Sportfishing In The Florida Keys” is an 8 ½ minute video presentation. This video features the Keys’ proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico along with other aspects that help define this area as a fishing phenomena. Action scenes highlight sought after game fish species and encourage catch and release.
“This video is an excellent addition to our web site,” said wife and partner Linda Sheldon, “and it demonstrates the deep association between Flying Fisherman® and the sport-fishing community.” Flying Fisherman® products were used during the making of the project. Florida Park Service Annual Parks Pass Photo Contest
Greetings everyone! I have had a wonderful year promoting the FPS photo contest and state parks. I’ve also been thrilled with the quantity and quality of the participants and photographs. We have been averaging 75-100 photographers and 200-250 photographs per month, which over a span of a year is a great many participants and photographs! For the 2004 photo contest, almost 600 different photographers participated. That’s a strong testament to the success of this program and certainly establishes that there are a lot of folks who really enjoy taking pictures and sharing their experiences while visiting the Real Florida!

International Smart Gear Competition offers $25,000 prize
The partners of the just-launched International Smart Gear Competition are trying to get the word out to potential applicants about our competition for wildlife-friendly fishing gear, which has a $25,000 grand prize.
The International Smart Gear Competition - an unprecedented coalition of fishermen, scientists and conservation groups - is now accepting entries for innovative fishing gear designs that reduce wildlife deaths.
The competition will award a $25,000US grand prize in early 2005 to the design judged to be the most practical, cost-effective method for reducing bycatch - the accidental deaths of marine mammals, birds, sea turtles and non-target fish species. Details can be found at
www.smartgear.org Conventional fishing gear often doesn't allow users to selectively target their catch. As a result, non-target fish species, marine mammals, birds and sea turtles are caught and sometimes killed.
Participants in the International Smart Gear Competition are asked to
develop fishing gears or methods that increase selectivity for target fish species and reduce bycatch of non-target species in ways that still allow fishermen to fish profitably. The competition is open to anyone - including professional gear manufacturers, backyard inventors, fishermen, students, engineers and scientists.
There are three categories for entries: gear that reduces sea turtle
bycatch, gear that reduces cetacean bycatch, and gear that reduces bycatch of any other non-target species. The winning entry will receive funding to take the design from the drawing-board stage to prototype development, testing, and initial manufacture.
"We're looking for real-world solutions that allow fishermen to better
target their catch and that reduce the economic and ecological costs of using inefficient gear," said Wally Pereyra, chairman of the board of the National Fisheries Institute, the leading trade association for the U.S. fish and seafood industry. "This unusual collaboration is an effort to address the limitations of gear technology."
The winner of the International Smart Gear Competition will be decided by judges from World Wildlife Fund; the National Fisheries Institute; the American Fisheries Society; the Fisheries Conservation Foundation; the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science; the Marine Wildlife Bycatch Consortium (comprised of the New England Aquarium, Duke University, the University of New Hampshire and the Maine Lobstermen's Association); the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. Sarah Janicke, (202) 778-9685.
