June 30, 2007
Greetings fellow members,
It is with profound sadness that I pass on the news that long-time FOWA corporate member Jerry Martin has died. His obituary is included in this issue.
Please also note the 2007 FOWA conference itinerary below. It’s going to be a great conference!
Kelly Braden KJBraden1@aol.com
CONFERENCE PROGRAM ADDITION!
Just added to the itinerary for the upcoming 61st Annual FOWA Conference in Homosassa: Doug Olander, Editor-in-Chief of Sport Fishing magazine, will provide a critique of images during lunch on Thursday, Sept. 13. If you'd like Doug to review some of your shots, send up to five digital images to him at doug.olander@bonniercorp.com. Doug will select a number of them and offer input. His critiques will be anonymous, so no one will be singled out or embarrassed.
Doug has noted over the years how much most photographers value any feedback they can get from editors, even images or slides that aren’t purchased, though editors seldom have time to offer that individually. So in this case, he’ll run through as many slides/images as he has time for, in essence offering his thoughts as if talking directly to each photographer (which he will be!). He’ll indicate whether or not he might purchase it for use in Sport Fishing, briefly explain why, and answer questions.
OBITUARY
From the Walker Agency:
You may already have heard the news, but in case you haven’t, Michael Verdon reports today that Jerry died Friday. I will miss him. He was an independent cuss, always polite and a competitor, but a friend. What a shock. If you didn’t know him, you missed having a good friend.
Industry stalwart Jerry Martin passes away
By IBI Magazine
Jerry Martin, one of the most recognized figures in the US boating industry, passed away last Friday at the age of 79. Martin was active in the boating industry for over a half-century, having entered the business in 1955 as Johnson Motors' first sales promotion manager.
Seven years later, Martin recognized the need for a liaison between manufacturers and boating magazine editors, and founded Jerry Martin Company in 1962. His company recently reunited with the Martin-Flory Group, headed by his daughter, Laura Martin, and Kelly Flory.
In 1964, Martin started a boat dealership, The Boat Show and Camping Center, in Gurnee, Illinois. His Johnson outboard dealership was also where OMC was based.
Martin was among the founders of the Marine Retailers Association of America, and served as its Director of Development for many years. He was eventually awarded its Irv Rosenthal Award, and also received the Mel Barr Award from the National Marine Representatives Association.
As one of the earliest charter members of Boating Writers International (BWI), Martin was awarded a Lifetime Membership in 1997, one of only 6 individuals to earn this distinction. He was also active in the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA).
In the international realm, Martin was also instrumental in helping to create the first boat show in Malaysia, as well as exhibiting at the first Shanghai show.
Martin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, his 7 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Languages Abroad offers New Bush Survival Volunteer Program
Surviving in the wilderness requires a deep appreciation of all of the complex and interconnected elements of one's natural surroundings. This appreciation is only one of the many points that our travelers develop in the one-week Bush Survival Course in Zimbabwe, offered by Languages Abroad.
For the past two years Languages Abroad has worked closely with its global partners and service providers to deliver a carefully selected roster of Volunteer Programs. LA insists that, like all of their program, their volunteer experiences will be memorable and authentic and deliver high customer satisfaction.
Many attendees of this unique program find solace in the organic lifestyle that the beautiful plains of Zimbabwe exhibit. "I never thought that I would be here. I was completely addicted to Starbucks and couldn't live without my cell phone, but here I am learning how to build a fire without matches. This experience is really opening my eyes not only the beautiful culture of the Shona and Ndbele, but also to this wonderful ecosystem" notes James Banister, a 25-year-old graduate student.
Participants in this program sleep under the stars in tents and gather at a base camp for all meals. Although there is a dedicated cook at the camp, there are times when students are asked to assist in the preparation of these meals. This concept is implemented to demonstrate the importance of communal living. Members within this volunteer group also learn to forge in the wilderness. Participants learn skills such as how to track animals, avoid dangerous situations, locate water sources and perform basic first aid procedures. For people that are new to learning from the land, these lessons prove to be life changing. "I'm not the same person who started this program. It has been frustrating at times, but ultimately stepping out of my comfort zone has really changed the way that I look at things," says Diana! Jones, who is a lawyer from Toronto.
Honing survival skills takes conscious effort. In order to address the dangers that exist in the bush, group leaders teach their students how to locate edible food sources as well as how to navigate their surroundings by using a compass. These students are also routinely called upon to calculate the speed by which their group should travel in order to reach a certain destination at a certain time.
The value of this volunteer program is that it draws out the inherent skills for survival that may lay dormant within us all. Any student or traveler of any age is sure to come back a changed individual after completing this fascinating course.
To learn more about this or any other volunteer program contact Languages Abroad and a dedicated staff member would be pleased to assist you.

CORPORATE CORNER
From Martin Flory Group:
Long-time FOWA corporate member Jerry Martin dies
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our founder, Jerry Martin. Jerry died peacefully at home on Friday, June 15, 2007. He had been ill for some time, but continued to find energy in the activities of his beloved marine industry.
Jerry started in the boating business in 1955, as Johnson Motors' first sales promotion manager. He recognized a need for a liaison between manufacturers and boating magazine editors, and founded Jerry Martin Company in 1962, today celebrating 45 years in business. He also experimented with marine retailing by building Johnson's hometown dealership, The Boat Show and Camping Center, in Gurnee, Illinois in 1964.
This led to a life-long passion for carving out a well-deserved place in the industry for retailers. He was among the founders of the Marine Retailers Association of America, and served proudly as Director of Development for many years.
When the Outdoor Writers Association of America was re-energized in the mid-1960s, he served as a financial liaison to put the organization on firm footing. He was recognized for his dedication to the industry many times over the years. Of special importance to him was the Irv Rosenthal Award from MRAA. He also received the Mel Barr Award from the National Marine Representatives Association. As one of the earliest charter members of Boating Writers International, he was awarded a Lifetime Membership in 1997, one of only 6 individuals to earn this distinction.
He also found great reward in traveling the world as a quasi-ambassador for boating. Jerry was instrumental in the first boat show to take place in Malaysia, as well as exhibiting at the first Shanghai show. He was a true fixture on the international marine scene.
Jerry and his daughter Laura had just announced the merger of their PR businesses the previous day, an event that brought great joy to both. He relished some of the early congratulations.
Jerry was 79 years old. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, his 7 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Services are pending.

Gone Fishin’ With Winchester® Lures
Winchester is taking its legendary brand to the angler, working with Little Sac Bait Company LLC to produce a new line of high-quality, American-made fishing lures.
“This is a unique opportunity to leverage the Winchester brand and work with a great partner in Little Sac Bait Company,” said Vicki Schrimpf, Manager of Winchester Licensing. “During the 1920s, Winchester manufactured fishing tackle and accessories. They were reliable, high-quality products … we’re bringing Winchester fishing lures back, and they will be a great working product.”
The flagship lure from the Little Sac Bait Company is the Winchester Slim Jim finesse jig, which features a 2/0 60° turned eye, light wire hook with an O’Shaughnessy bend. The hook was specially designed by Gamakatsu for the Little Sac Bait Company and allows for better penetration. The jig design also results in 75 percent less hang ups and better balance over rocks, ledges, and obstructions. The jigs are dressed with 22-30 strands of premium silicone skirting.
Winchester Shaky head and Grub head jigs are also available. The jigs all feature Little Sac’s flex systems paint, which is hard enough to withstand plenty of use, yet flexible enough not to chip.
Suggested prices for Winchester lures:
Slim Jim $2.79 Shaky head (4-pack) $2.66 Grub head (4-pack) $2.66
