JAKES Magazine
JAKES is the National Wild Turkey Federation’s publication for members of its youth program, JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship). All stories need to be fun and keep the interest of readers (mean age of 10 years). Feature criteria should be either documentary or fictional with emphasis on the outdoors, conservation, hunting, hunter safety, hunting ethics or heritage. Stories should be between 1,000 and 1,200 words. Photos should illustrate wildlife, conservation, colorful scenics, families participating in hunting and outdoor pastimes together and youth and their involvement in hunting. Article payment is negotiable, starting at $100. Pay is $75-$200 for inside original color transparencies and $400 for cover photos. Purchased are first North American serial rights and, in some cases, all electronic rights. Query first, but “laundry lists” of article ideas are welcome. Montana Magazine
Montana Magazine varies from 100 pages to 132 pages and is noted for excellent photographs and entertaining, informative writing about Montana. The magazine contains about five feature articles of 1,800 to 2,500 words and four to six departments of 800 to 2,500 words. Montana Magazine is published bimonthly, in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Both written queries and unsolicited manuscripts are accepted. Please be patient – eventually, all submissions are reviewed and all writers notified. Montana Magazine’s basic rate is approximately .15 per published word. Payment for assigned, published photographs is additional: full-page, $125; larger than half page, $100; half page or smaller, $50. Payment, returnable materials and a complimentary copy of the magazine are sent within 30 days of publication. Outdoor America is the membership magazine of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA). Also sought are stories about IWLA members practicing conservation and outdoor ethics in their communities. Assignments average 25 to 35 cents per word. Paint Horse Journal
Paint Horse Journal (PHJ) seeks material for its “Great Rides” page. This page is a quick-read destination piece for horseback-riding enthusiasts. All submissions must include at least two good-quality, well-composed photos of the area, with at least one shot showing a horse and rider. Because the PHJ is a breed publication, the magazine cannot use photos of appaloosas, Arabians or equines that obviously could not be paint horses. Photos should have a description of how to get to the location, horse/trailer accommodations at the trailhead and what will be seen on the ride itself (approximately 350-400 words total). Shotgun Sports
Writers for Shotgun Sports should have first-hand knowledge of hunting, trapshooting, skeet or sporting clays or be knowledgeable in other areas of shotgunning. Shotgun Sports articles are test reports, think pieces, historical pieces and interviews. High-quality photographs are usually required with any submission. Payment for articles ranges from $50 to $200. Pay is upon publication. Shotgun Sports purchases all rights. Text should be typed in black ink, double-spaced, on one side of white 8.5x11” bond paper with a 1” margin and page numbers. Include name, address and phone number on the manuscript. Do not use special fonts or special embedded characters. Do not submit artwork on disk; send b&w or color photos or color transparencies. Provide printed hard copy with computer-disk submissions. Photographs, with captions, should be 5”x7” or 8”x10” for b&w or color; color transparencies, 35 mm or larger; or digital photos (2.1 megapixel for copy photos and 3 mexapixel for full-page and covers, minimum of 300 dpi). Photos should be mailed, even if you e-mail copies. All submissions should be accompanied by return postage. The majority of articles rejected are due to poor photographs. Do not query! Wheelin’ Sportsmen
Wheelin’ Sportsmen is a quarterly magazine dedicated to bringing the outdoors to disabled outdoors enthusiasts who enjoy all kinds of hunting, fishing, recreational shooting and other outdoor activities. The publication is also a tool for able-bodied sportsmen and women to learn more about sharing the outdoors with their disabled peers. Feature articles average 1,500 words. Most articles are targeted to people with disabilities that range from “how to enjoy” to “where to enjoy” the outdoors. Also sought are stories about disabled people who enjoy the outdoors and ways able-bodied individuals can help the disabled participate in outdoor fun. Photos should illustrate wildlife; conservation; colorful scenics; individuals with a variety of disabilities participating in hunting, shooting, fishing and other outdoor pastimes; and able-bodied and disabled people enjoying the outdoors together. Women in the Outdoors is a quarterly magazine dedicated to inform and entertain outdoorswomen of all skill levels who aspire to become more involved in a variety of outdoor sports, including camping, fishing, hiking, shooting, hunting, canoeing, boating and bird watching. Feature articles average 1,800 words. Shorter articles average 800 words, with departments such as outdoor-related book reviews, game and fish recipes, wildlife profiles, stories of notable outdoorswomen, outdoor health issues, outdoor gear and backyard habitat enhancement. Articles should treat women as independent outdoors enthusiasts, depict outdoor activities in a positive/encouraging manner and appeal to a national audience. Great American Writing Road Trip Adventure

“Smart Gear” Contest
The International Smart Gear Competition seeks innovative fishing gear that reduces bycatch – accidental deaths of marine mammals, birds, sea turtles and non-target fish species. The competition is open to anyone – professional gear manufacturers, fishermen, students, engineers and scientists – and will award a $25,000 prize to the design judged to be the most practical, cost-effective method for reducing bycatch of any species. The winner also will be provided with assistance in bringing the design to market. There are three categories for entries: gear that reduces sea turtle bycatch, gear that reduces cetacean bycatch and gear that reduces bycatch of other non-target species. For more information, go to
