Greetings fellow members,

I received 179 entries from 31 members for the Excellence in Crafts Awards contest. The entries were mailed to the judges, six of whom were new, on May 20th. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Once again, the frequency of the Market Edge depends on the amount of material collected. If you come across any market need, press trip, contest, event or job, please send it to me to share with your fellow FOWA members.

Please see the following letter from the Florida Sea Grant regarding our FOWA scholarship.

HIGHLIGHTED MARKETS

Sport Fishing

Howdy, Mates -- Once again, a few foto needs.... enough to justify this APB. As always, please the contact primary editor listed for each need. Med-rez jpgs fine for initial review. (Very lo-rez are tough because they end up either so small or so fuzzy onscreen that an assessment is difficult.) Always happy to look at potentially great COVER images. Also, happy to review digital images anytime -- never hurts to share new stuff so we have a good idea who’s got what....

Cheers --

CURRENT MARKETS

Bird Hunting Report

The Bird Hunting Report newsletter speaks to traveling wing shooters who want the facts on quality places to hunt. Sought for publication are experienced-based, fact-checked reports that make educated value judgments and recommendations about available worldwide hunting opportunities: on public and private lands, in lodges and clubs or “do-it-yourself.” This is a great secondary market for information you’ve gathered for other stories. Payment is 16 cents per word for an 800-1,000-word report. No photo support is required. Direct questions, queries and requests for style sheets to Managing Editor Tom Carney, tom@birdhuntingreport.com.

FLW Outdoors magazine, published eight times annually, three editions per issue (bass, walleye and saltwater), is geared toward serious anglers. The saltwater edition’s editors currently seek general saltwater queries. Articles should be 1,800-2,500 words in addition to a short sidebar. Pay is $500 per article and $50-100 per photo. Manuscripts must be original; print and Web rights to manuscripts and photographs are purchased. Submissions are acknowledged upon receipt. Queries will be answered as time permits. E-mail queries to Will Brantley, associate editor, at wbrantley@flwoutdoors.com.

Women are a growing demographic in the outdoor recreation world. Womenoutdoorsmagazine.com intends to provide solid content and information for women interested in new outdoor activities. The editors seek articles about hunting, fishing, camping, travel, horses, cooking in the field, hiking, family adventure, gear that actually works for women and short, newsy pieces on interesting events. This is a quarterly publication, and articles for any season are sought. Please have at least one digital photo available per article. Payment is $25 per feature article and $10 for a short piece, paid on publication, with byline and link to your Web site. Reprints are fine. lesley@belluspr.com

We are hosting a Grand Ole Opry/Gaylord Entertainment media visit July 12 - 15, 2007.

The Grand Ole Opry, an American institution, is the perfect getaway blending music, history and fun. The oldest continuous radio program in the United States (since November 28, 1925), the Opry is a weekly
country music radio program broadcast live on WSM radio in Nashville, Tennessee and televised on the Great American Country network.

The Opry is not just a destination for country music fans. The country-western genre has its roots in traditional folk music, Celtic music, blues, gospel and old time tunes. Country music is at the root
of us all, as it has descended from folk songs, ballads and other songs of the English, Scottish and Irish settlers of the U.S. southeastern seaboard. The Opry offers a variety of travel angles including, family travel, unique travel, locations within driving distance and, of course, historic/Americana opportunities.

In many ways, the artists and repertoire of the Opry defined American country music. Hundreds of performers have entertained as cast members over the years, including new stars, superstars and legends. You never know who you'll see at the Opry. Current members include Trace Adkins, Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood, many often making impromptu appearances.

During your visit, you'll experience the Opry - likely from backstage. You'll stay at the incredible Gaylord Opryland hotel and, of course, we'll arrange for you to experience other Nashville destinations such
as the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame and more.

CORPORATE CORNER

From TJ Stallings:

Would your company be able to help?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, The Ocean Conservancy, Brevard County, and Florida Sea Grant are among the many who have joined forces to implement the Monofilament Recovery and
Recycling Program (MRRP) in Florida.

Monofilament fishing line lasts up to 600 years in the environment.  The discarded line entangles wildlife (eventually leading to starvation, drowning, or loss of flipper, fin, or limb), pollutes the environment, and is hazardous to boaters, divers, and swimmers.  The MRRP goal is to decrease the hazards caused by discarded fishing line by increasing public awareness, conducting volunteer cleanup events, and encouraging monofilament line recycling.

MRRP needs your help!  In an effort to expand the monofilament-recycling network, participation of local organizations is needed.  We are looking for donators to sponsor the t-shirt project.  Below are the sample t-shirt logos we have designed to give to our volunteers in order to spread the word throughout Florida.  We are asking local businesses to participate by purchasing a logo site on the back of the t-shirt.  There are three logo sites available within the design attached to this email.  Each site costs $300.  The donations will cover the cost of 144 t-shirts for volunteers,
shipping, and 12 t-shirts for each donor.

This project will enable you to advertise your company as well as promote the Monofilament program.  Please make out checks to the: Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program

Thank you for your consideration and helping us improve Florida's marine environment one project at a time.

Sincerely,

Christy Hudak

Coleman Sends Aid to Greensburg

Company’s Emergency Response Team Rallies To Support Residents and Emergency Personnel

Wichita, Kan. (May 9, 2007) – Following last Friday’s devastating tornado that leveled the town of Greensburg, Kan., aid is pouring in from both government and private sources. Among them, The Coleman Company, Inc. is packing a semi-trailer filled with gear to support the displaced residents in their time of need and also to help house and protect the dedicated emergency workers who are on the scene restoring vital services. The Coleman® products being loaded include lanterns and fuel, shelters, airbeds and pumps, food and beverage coolers, sleeping bags, and battery-powered lights – as much as the truck will hold.

According to Tim Daniel, Coleman’s vice president of special markets and the coordinator of the company’s emergency response team, the products lend themselves to multiple uses. “Today, most of what Coleman sells is designed for outdoor fun,” Daniel said. “But with this shipment, we’re hailing back to their original purpose – to provide heat, light, shelter and comfort for people living in the outdoors, and this time, it’s not by choice.

“Coleman is committed to providing support to people in need, but this time it’s close to home,” Daniel said. “The folks in Greensburg are our neighbors. Our hearts go out to them, and it is our hope that the products we send will raise their spirits, as well as support them and the emergency personnel working at their sides to rebuild their town.”

The truck filled with Coleman products leaves Wichita Wednesday morning for Greensburg, 105 miles to the west. “All of us at Coleman hope that those in Greensburg will use what we’ve sent and know that we’re with them and so is everyone else,” Daniel said.

The Coleman Company, Inc. is an international leader in the innovation and marketing of outdoor products, including its legendary lanterns, as well as stoves, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, coolers, furniture and grills. Its products are sold and used all over the world. Coleman embraces its leadership role as an advocate for the outdoors, contributing to outdoor causes and inspiring people to get outside.
