Wave covers everything in, on or around the water from Palm Beach to Key West, including boating, fishing, diving, watersports, travel & destinations.

Wave’s immediate needs:

  • Diving stories, particularly dive excursions in the Keys or any of the other South Florida counties, and stories about a particular dive site.

Our photo needs for the Summer 2004 issue are individuals (preferably disabled):

International Wildlife Magazine
International Wildlife, which covers wildlife and a range of related subjects outside the United States, is a sister magazine to National Wildlife, published for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). The magazine is published six times a year. Types of articles published include environmental and wildlife issues, wildlife profiles, species status reports, adventure, profiles, scientific trends, humor, essays, how-tos, wildlife art, anthropology, paleontology, underwater and historical pieces. Most stories run 1,500 to 2,500 words. The magazine also publishes short features of about 750 words. Payment begins at $450 and ranges upward for longer stories. The magazine buys all rights to text and one-time rights to photographs, plus reprint and promotion rights for the NWF. Pictures and text submitted together will be purchased as a package. The International Smart Gear Competition seeks innovative fishing gear that reduces bycatch - the accidental deaths of marine mammals, birds, sea turtles and non-target fish species. The competition is open to anyone, including professional gear manufacturers, backyard inventors, fishermen, students, engineers and scientists. A $25,000 grand prize will be awarded to the design judged to be the most practical, cost-effective method for reducing bycatch of any species. The winner also will be provided with assistance in bringing the design to market. There are three categories for entries: gear that reduces sea turtle bycatch, gear that reduces cetacean bycatch and gear that reduces bycatch of any other non-target species. Recreational Fishing Alliance

(The following is based on a report funded in part by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation on effective lobby organizations. It was entitled “Turning the Tide, Charting a Course to Improve the Effectiveness of Public Advocacy for the Ocean,” by David Wilmot, Ph.D. and Jack K. Sterne, J.D.)

Recreational Fishing Alliance Angling for Success by Working Capitol Hill

The RFA is a FOWA Corporate Sponsor that's registered as a nonprofit 501 (c) (4) with a connected PAC. RFA also has a separate nonprofit 501 (c) (3) that supports research. An active player in most national fisheries debates and many state-level issues, RFA has 35,000 dues-paying members with another 50,000-70,000 affiliated members (members of sport clubs or other organizations affiliated with REAL). The membership is made up of recreational anglers, boat and tackle manufacturers and fishing clubs. RFA protects the interests of anglers, including their ability to fish, and proclaims to be “your voice on Capitol Hill.” RFA is the leading proponent
of the Fish Act now before congress.
Founded less than a decade ago, RFA proposed from the beginning that the problems facing recreational anglers were political in nature and would require a political solution. It uses a full suite of political tools to build political champions who will introduce legislation for it and block legislation it opposes. Its strength comes from a mix of limited electoral involvement personal-contact lobbying, and the ability to mobilize its base.
Moreover, RFA knows how to pick a battle, figure out what it needs to get done, and take steps to get there. Finally, RFA has a constant presence on Capitol Hill, state legislatures, and federal agencies -- with three registered lobbyists who lobby only on behalf of RFA -- and this presence pays off in policy success. In a very short period of time, RFA has shown the ability to gain access to key people in the Administration, Congress and certain state legislatures. A chief ally is Rep. James Saxton of New Jersey, who has come to recognize through RFA's efforts that recreational angling is an important constituency.
Personal contact and grassroots lobbying is RFA’s focus. As Executive Director Jim Donofrio likes to say, “Democracy is not a spectator sport.” RFA publishes a newsletter and maintains a web page to keep its members informed and engaged. It recognizes the power of grassroots lobbying is in the grassroots. A key aspect of RFA’s strategy is to build strategic alliances with other groups, in particular fishing clubs and non-profit outdoor writers' organizations such as FOWA. Researchers Need Help Locating Glass Vials

St. Petersburg -To examine water patterns and determine where fish and conch in south Florida come from, biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI) started releasing glass vials in the waters of Florida and Mexico on May 24.
FWC biologists will release glass drift vials from five locations in the
deep reef and back reef areas of the Florida Keys. At the same time,
science partners in Mexico will release vials at four additional
locations. Each vial contains instructions printed in English and Spanish. Those who find the vials are asked to report their discoveries to a U.S. toll-free number, an email address, or telephone numbers in Mexico.
Researchers need people to report the following information:

1. The drift vial number
2. The date the vial was found
3. The location where the vial was collected

To encourage participation, the names of those who find and report the vials will be entered in a raffle. More than 50 prizes will be awarded. This project is funded in part by the Exxon Mobil Foundation.
