May 12, 2004

Hello. I hope all of you who are mothers had a wonderful Mother's Day.

The Spring Conference pictures are up on the FOWA web site (www.fowa.org). Many thanks to Mike Richards for all his hard work on the web site and to Sandy Friend, Susan Young, Charlie Walker and Steve Kearl for their photo contributions.

Kate Hart wants everyone to know that she left Airboat World. Her message: “I have resigned from ABW to pursue other opportunities and to freelance. I no longer desire to manage ABW for many reasons and wish to do more creative writing and photography. I have officially left the position as of 4/30/04 and have enjoyed working with them [the writers] and hope to see them as a fellow writer at the conference in Sarasota. Thanks, Kate."

As always, please send any current market listings or corporate sponsor write-ups to me at KJBraden1@aol.com.

CORPORATE CORNER

Just this past week, Doug and I visited Key Island Estate, one of our corporate sponsors, for an article assignment. It’s beautiful and very peaceful. Just three miles south of Naples, the eight-mile-long island has a beach on one side fronting the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other side. Sand trails wind through the island and beautiful shells cover the beach.

The 6,000-square-foot main house is three stories and lodge in style, with a huge main room and a wrap-around screened verandah complete with hammocks, picnic tables and a porch swing – all great vantage points to watch sunrises and sunsets. Four rooms are spoked to the main room via footbridges. And let’s not forget the bar next to the dock, where snook play in the dock lights at night.

Key Island Estate is a great island retreat, with all the amenities and simply awesome cooking. Better take a cell phone if you must stay connected to the concrete jungle world, but we preferred leaving all that behind and just letting the stress drain from us.

We fished offshore and near shore, with Doug catching a small snook at the end of the island that we accessed with one of the resort’s golf carts; we also picked up some neat shells and driftwood. Key Island is at the doorstep of Rookery Bay Estuarine Sanctuary so bring your camera; turtle nesting season peaks during the summer months as well. Resort owners Jimmy and Stacey Kanzler welcome FOWA members, so check into it. I know Doug and I will definitely return to again unwind and get great story material. Contact Stacey@thesandbagger.com, 815-405-7555 or visit www.keyislandestate.com.
