Budget Bike Tours Still Abound in Europe despite Falling Dollar

European Tour Companies Offer Weeklong Tours from $740 through BikeToursDirect

Contact:Jim Johnson
BikeToursDirect

jjohnson@biketoursdirect.com

Chattanooga, Tenn., March 10, 2008 -- As the dollar continues to falter, European bicycle tour companies still offer excellent values, with many one-week tours under $1,000. Travelers in North America can book the tours through U.S.-based BikeToursDirect, which represents

38 European companies and offers nearly 200 tours on its website, .

Self-guided tours start at less than $800 (all prices listed are per person, double occupancy, based on early March 2008 exchange rates) and include lodging in 3-star hotels, daily breakfasts, luggage transfers, bicycle rentals, detailed route information and service hotline. For example, among self-guided programs, a one-week tour from Salzburg to Vienna, Austria, costs $740, a six-night bike-and- barge tour along Germanys Mosel River costs $770, a six-night tour in Italy from Bolzano to Verona costs $895, and a one-week tour in Frances Loire Valley costs $930.

Guided toursmost adding ride-along guides, support vans and dinnersstart at just over $800. A one-week guided tour exploring the region around Krakow, Poland, costs $825, a one-week tour along Germanys Rhine River costs $1040, a tour across Slovenia costs $1120, and a tour in Frances Provence region costs $1240.

Many tours are appropriate for families and novice cyclists.

BikeToursDirect bills its website as a one-stop resource for bike tours in Europe and helps cycle tourists find tours based on preferences like destination, month, duration, cost and level of difficulty. Clients book the tours and make all payments through BikeToursDirect, usually at the same prices charged by the European companies. The site also offers helpful advice and travel tips such as how to choose a tour and what clothes to bring.

The European companies are able to keep their tour prices down due to the low cost of doing business in their home countries, to a large volume of European clients and to the frequency of their toursmany with weekly and even daily departures. This gives the tour companies many economies of scale as well as the ability to negotiate low rates at hotels along the tour routes.

FYI

From Mike Walker:

BoatU.S. Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program Needs Your Help to Add More Loaner Locations Donations Sought to Grow Life-Saving Program for Boaters, Anglers The nation’s only program that lends kid-sized life jackets for free to boaters or anglers is looking to grow. The BoatU.S. Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner Program, which offers infant, toddler and children’s life jackets at over 350 nationwide locations has launched a campaign to raise $50,000 in additional funds to meet increasing demand by establishing new loaner locations at marinas, boat ramps, waterside resorts, boat clubs, bait shops, towboats, fire houses and other public facilities. The life jackets are typically loaned out for a day or weekend.

Started in 1997, the program has loaned out life jackets on average more than 50,000 times a year – and saved three lives – as well as given thousands of parents peace of mind knowing that their children are wearing a correctly fitted life jacket.

A tax-deductible donation of only $10 will buy one vest-style life jacket and $250 will create a completely new, fully stocked loaner site. The $50,000 fundraising drive will also help replenish life jackets at some existing locations. Funding for the program is also supported in part by the 650,000 members of BoatU.S.

“When boaters or anglers bring young guests aboard, they may not have the right-sized life jacket or a child may have outgrown their old jacket, so the youngster is sometimes put in one that is too big, or worse, goes without one,” said BoatU.S. Foundation Program Manager Ted Sensenbrenner.

“Putting a kid in an ill-fitted jacket can be dangerous. Once in the water, small children can easily slip out of them,” he added.

Since many states, as well as a federal rule, now require life jackets to be worn by children, the loaner program has helped out families caught unaware of such requirements.

Go to BoatUS.com/Foundation to make your donation online or mail your donation to: BoatU.S. Foundation, c/o Life Jacket Loaner Program, 880 South Pickett St., Alexandria, VA 22304. To find a loaner site in your area visit BoatUS.com/foundation/ljlp.

The BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit education and research organization

primarily funded by the voluntary contributions of BoatU.S. members.

The Foundation operates more than a dozen programs including the only accredited, free, online general boating safety course, a low-cost EPIRB rental program, and the “Help Stop the Drops” national clean fueling campaign. It has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants for nonprofit groups for boating safety and environmental projects.
