Introduction

This edition of the FOWA Market Newsletter contains information on Freshwater Fishing (in the last section titled Markets). Previous editions of the FOWA MNL contained Market listings for Saltwater Fishing and General Fishing as well as Fly Fishing, Juvenile and Wildlife publications. If you would like back issues of any FOWA Market Newsletter, please email Kelly Braden at KJBraden1@aol.com. Also, if you have additions to market listings or current needs in any genre, please send them to the same email address for the next FOWA Market Newsletter. These market listings are being added to our FOWA website by Mike Richards in the special Members Only section. Future issues will highlight Hunting, Canoeing/Kayaking, Diving, Camping and Florida regional publications, to name just a few – contact me with what you’d like to see first if you have a preference.

We also would like to hear about your successes with the Market Newsletter and, with your permission, will highlight them in future issues.

In this issue a new section is introduced which highlights new products, writer benefits and information/photo support available from our Corporate Sponsors. Our Corporate Sponsors can be a tremendous help when traveling to new areas (even outside Florida) or writing articles. I personally had help from the Sarasota CVB and Coleman while doing an article on Camping. They assisted with locating campgrounds and providing pictures and information on products. Our corporate sponsors are there for us! If you are a Corporate Sponsor, and would like to see your write-up in the Corporate Corner section, please send it to (yes, you guessed it) KJBraden1@aol.com.

Healthy Living Today, San Francisco, CA (only accepts email queries). Email: editor (at) healthy-living-today.net. Website: http://www.healthy-living-today.net (site will launch in January 2004). Patrice-Anne Rutledge, Editor. 80% freelance. Healthy Living Today is a new website scheduled to debut in January 2004. "We are seeking contributions for the four main channels on our site: Healthy Travel – staying healthy while traveling, destination spas and resorts, adventure travel, and ecotourism; Healthy Eating – organic and natural foods, nutrition (based on sound scientific data, not fads), healthy restaurant eating, and healthy cooking (including recipes); Healthy Home – natural home and yard care, raising healthy kids and pets, environmentally-friendly homes; Healthy You – fitness and relaxation, home spa, natural personal care and cosmetics. Our style is informal, yet informative. We approach the topic of healthy living from a mainstream point of view. In addition, we're service-oriented and publish features that tell readers how and where to do something (no first-person essays or personal travelogues). We are happy to work with talented new writers who are knowledgeable about some aspect of healthy living." Circ. will be available after site launch. Weekly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms within 2 months of acceptance. Buys first N.A. serial rights. Accepts reprints. Usually responds within one week. See sample articles on website after January, 2004 launch. Guidelines by email to editor (at) healthy-living-today.net.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We welcome ideas in all areas, but are particularly looking for contributions for the following: Healthy Home channel - we receive few queries for this channel and are open to some innovative ideas in this area; Healthy Cooking and Eating Right features - Healthy Cooking focuses on a particular cuisine (such as Healthy Cooking, Italian Style) and includes several recipes. Eating Right provides a roundup of healthy restaurant reviews for a particular city (such as Eating Right in San Francisco); Photo Gallery - these travel features emphasize outstanding photography on a destination of great natural beauty and they include multiple photos with a minimum of text. We are also looking for a licensed esthetician to write a series on healthy skin care and an expert in environmentally-friendly housing to write some features on this topic." Pays $10/article, extra for photos. "We hope to adjust our pay scale after site launch." Articles average 750-1000 words (flexible). Send "a traditional query on a particular article topic or send a brief message that outlines your experience and provides a list of the topics you can cover" via email to editor (at) healthy-living-today.net (no attachments).
PHOTOS/ART: Pays "variable fee" in addition to article fee.
HINTS: "Writers should study guidelines and query on topics that match those guidelines. We receive quite a few queries suggesting first-person stories, which we don't publish ('My First Yoga Class', 'How I Got My Kids to Eat Vegetables', etc.). New writers should read several good books about freelancing to learn the do's and don'ts and then approach editors with a well-written query about an exciting new topic. The query is particularly important for the new writer because it can really show your ability to write in the absence of clips."

The institute covers 15 hours of instruction for writers, experienced travelers and others considering careers in article and guidebook work. Instructors and their major credits include: Meredith M. Babb (assistant editor in chief, University Press of Florida); Tom Brosnahan (Turkey Travel Planner, Lonely Planet, Frommer Guides); Lee Foster (YellowBrix.com, Globe-Pequot); Herb Hiller (Fodor's, Pineapple Press); M.
