Dear FOWA Members,

This sad news is from Bill Parlasca:

On January 12, we lost a great storyteller and friend when Charley Waterman passed away at age 91. He had battled illnesses resulting from injuries suffered following a hit-and-run incident while riding his bicycle several years ago but continued writing until a few months ago. Charley leaves countless pages of fascinating outdoor memories in print for all time.
Charley commanded a Navy combat photo team in the Pacific and a number of his WWII combat photos will be displayed on the restored boat.

From Sandy Huff:
Sandy Huff's romantic comedy play "CHOMP!" is being produced by the Oldsmar Players on Jan 27-30. Plot? A group of wannabe poets show up for a poetry retreat. But instead of a luxury resort, they find an old shack in the swamp, and it's surrounded by some strange creatures.

The play is technically a farce, as two of the characters (a gator named Big George and a vine) are non-human. And it will be a staged reading, meaning the actors will have their scripts in their hands. Tickets are $6, and are available at the door of the Oldsmar Arts Center on St. Pete Drive. Performances start at 7 p.m. on 1/27, 1/28,1/29 and 1/30 at 3 p.m.

Says Sandy: “Come early. Laugh at everything, just as a favor to me. If nothing else, enjoy the cookies and punch.”

From Tim O'Keefe:

Looking for Authors for the Univ. Press of Florida
Become an Author, Not Just a Writer

The University Press of Florida is looking for titles for its new "Wild Florida" series, and FOWA members are invited to submit their ideas. The series is as far-ranging as the name implies. Titles may cover how-to, outdoor travel or biographies of Floridians associated with Wild Florida's heritage.
Accepted titles in the series include Wild Florida Islands, A Hiker's Guide to the Sunshine State and 30 Eco-Trips in Florida: The Best Nature Excursions and How to Reduce Your Impact on the Environment. The books average 225 published pages.
One approved title still needing an author: Motorcycle Journeys Around Florida.
The process is simple. Send a 2-paragraph idea to FOWA member Tim O'Keefe, the series editor, at
mtimokeefe@cs.com and mention Wild Florida somewhere in the subject heading. Include a list of your writing credits.
If appropriate, Tim will propose the idea to the Press and usually have an answer within a week or 10 days (if not sooner). Then you'll be asked to develop a more detailed proposal of two pages max.
You, the author, will be the copyright holder. Royalties are based on net sales and paid annually.

Fur-Fish-Game is looking for fresh outdoor story ideas and is published 12 months a year, mostly seasonal hunting, fishing and trapping. However, the editors are always open to something new and maybe a little different. Readers like instructive how-to, but not beginner’s stuff. They also enjoy humor and wilderness adventure. Especially sought are trapping stories, as long as the writer has the expertise to write knowledgeably about the topic. Readers don’t want interviews with “pro” hunters, fishermen or trappers; they want to hear it first person from someone who is out there living the life. Top pay for a standard how-to feature is $250; pay is higher for something of special interest. Purchased are first North American serial rights. No phone calls. Write to Editor Mitch Cox, Fur-Fish-Game, 2878 E. Main St., Columbus, OH 43209,

Sport Fishing Photos
Currently, Sport Fishing has the following needs (please e-mail editor listed before submitting): smoker (big) king mackerel, any capacity (contact Andy Hahn at
andy.hahn@worldpub.net); and commercial fishing activity of any kind in Pacific Mexico/Central American waters (contact Doug Olander at doug.olander@worldpub.net). Deadline for these images is Jan. 7. Also needed are photos of fishing reefs/wrecks off Georgia, Carolinas for various species, particularly larger fish (contact Andy Hahn); and anglers in belt/harness offshore fighting big fish stand-up. (contact Chris Woodward at chris.woodward@
worldpub.net
). Deadline for these images is Feb. 2. Sport Fishing is using more and more digital images. For large blow-ups (full pages, spreads, covers), the best results usually come from sharp, original transparencies. However, really high-quality, high-resolution cameras are increasingly providing images that can be run large – especially if they’re sent with as RAW files, not saved as JPGs. JPGs still may be submitted via e-mail for initial review. If you send a CD with images, include both low-rez versions as well as high-rez TIFs. Sport Fishing is always in the market for good covers. Read guidelines (at www.sportfishingmag.com under “editorial”). Any shot selected pays at least $1,000. Most saltwater game fish/fishing considered – with sharks (notably sport species such as makos, threshers, blacktips and tigers topping the list – especially in action), redfish, snook, tarpon, bonefish, king mackerel, tuna (yellowfin, bluefin, blackfin), dolphin, cobia, white seabass, California yellowtail, striped bass and wahoo among those sought, but other species have potential, provided they’re unusually dynamic. Billfish (including broadbill) are always considered. Particularly dramatic fishing-scenics also considered. Sport Fishing purchases first English-language rights. Contact Managing Editor Ted Lund (ted.lund@worldpub.net) with general questions or to submit cover images. Visit www.sportfishingmag.com.
