The 61st Annual Florida Outdoor Writers Conference (FOWA) is scheduled for September 12 – 15 at Homosassa. Mary Craven and Tracie Conti of Citrus County, www.VisitCitrus.com, are working toward an exciting event.
Given the competitive tourism markets, we need these outdoor writers to well communicate Florida destinations to their various audiences. Because FOWA represents the top outdoor communicators in the state, please use this conference to pitch your offerings and to present media kits.
The FOWA Board of Directors has asked me to seek your involvement. As of this date, the conference has 68 media & guests attending along with 16 corporate representatives. The conference itinerary follows or is available by clicking www.fowa.org.
This conference schedule presents two opportunities to mix & mingle and to communicate your tourism story ideas:
- Wednesday, 6 – 7 pm, Sept. 12, CVB Cocktail Reception
- Thursday, 4:30 – 6:30 pm, Sept. 13, Corporate Breakout
Aside from pitching journalists, other conference opportunities include:
- Present destination travel packages for live & silent auction (Friday, Sept. 14) to benefit youth scholarships supporting future generations of outdoor writers . These packages are only available for bid by journalists.
- Discuss options as future conference host with opportunities available beginning in 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
cast your line for family fun at the 2007 oh boy! oberto redfish tournament and Festival may 4-6 th in charlotte harbor
$100,000 purse highlights weekend of fishing and festivities
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Recognized as one of the most visible and lucrative Redfish Tournament in the world, the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup Tournament, sponsored by Redfish Nation, launches off the shores of Punta Gorda, Fla. on May 4, 5 and 6, 2007. In addition to world-class fishing for participating anglers, the Festival brings three days of exciting activities for all ages, including the infamous Cardboard Boat Race, the ESPN Big Air Dog Show and the ”Relatively Redfish” art competition. ÒA true professional tour, this tournament attracts the best saltwater anglers in the world, says David Healy, Vice President of Marketing for Redfish Nation. A grand prize of $40,000 with an additional $60,000 in cash and prizes awaits those who compete in the three-day tournament. There is also a chance for anglers to earn points toward a season-end Redfish Tournament Championship with a grand prize of $75,000. Last yearÕs winners took top honors with a two-day total weigh-in of 25.01 pounds, while all other top five contenders brought in over 23 pounds each in weigh-ins.
The Festival gets visitors into the action with events, a concert, competitions and a variety of vendor booths and food for everyone to enjoy. With a prize for Most Dramatic Sinking the Cardboard Boat Race is a favorite. Homemade boats constructed of cardboard, tape and glue compete in a 150-yard paddle to the finish. The ESPN Big Air Dog Show presents a crowd-pleasing competition of canine jumps and measured leaps into a dock-side pool. Again this year is the ”Relatively Redfish” art competition with cash prizes and fintastic fun. Singer-song writer Jim Morris, often compared to Jimmy Buffet, will play a free concert on Saturday evening, May 5.
Last year’s tournament drew 90 teams and another 10,000 festival goers; making it the top stop on the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup Series,Ó said Becky Bovell, Director of the Charlotte County Florida VisitorÕs Bureau, the main sponsor of the event. Not only did the lure of Charlotte Harbor reel in the largest field on the Redfish Cup circuit, but its popularity was the deciding factor in Redfish Nation making Punta Gorda a permanent stop on the tour.
